The Great Lakes State is home to around 357 craft breweries cranking out over 899,792 gallons of beer per year. If you’re looking to ring in the new year with a tasty beverage, then you must try one of these local brews, which will all surely remind you of the slopes and winter spirit no matter where you are.

1) Ski Jump IPA by 51st State Brewing Company

Eddie the Eagle fans will certainly appreciate the namesake of this brew. Ski Jump IPA is a classic hoppy beer with citrus and pine aromas. 51st State boastfully refers to the Upper Peninsula where Pine Mountain Ski Jump — the inspiration behind this beer — is located. The Ski Jumping Continental Cup competition, ranking right below the World Cup in prestige, takes place at Pine Mountain every year. The mountain also holds the U.S. record for the longest ski jump in the world at 459 feet. And if you make it through that jump, you most definitely deserve a cold one at the end!

2) Ski Patrol by Brewery Vivant

The appeal of this next beer is its crushable and easy-drinking nature — perfect for partaking in après-ski. Ski Patrol offers a hazy golden pour with hints of orange peel and a warming spice on the nose. Brewery Vivant suggests pairing your pint with home baked granola bars, hot chicken pot pie, or good ol’ ski lodge pizza. The brewery is also housed in an 80+ year-old former funeral chapel in Grand Rapids, with preserved stained glass and other ornate details.

3) Snow Machine IPA by Big Lake Brewing

This double India Pale Ale packs double the refreshing punch. Brewed with Simcoe, Columbus, and Amarillo hops, Snow Machine IPA is a West Coast-style, non-hazy IPA that every beer purist will appreciate. Established in Holland, Big Lake Brewing’s beer pays homage to the many snowmaking machines across our state that give Mother Nature a helping hand during slow winter starts.

4) Ski Bum by Tapistry Brewing Co.

By combining artistry and chemistry, Tapistry Brewing hits a home run with this crisp and refreshing pilsner. It’s meant to complement a long day on the slopes; whether you prefer moguls, straight up slalom, or tearing up the terrain park. “Embrace your inner Ski Bum!” Tapistry Brewing Company is based in Bridgman.

5) Bright White by Bell’s Brewery

Previously called Winter White, Bell’s popular seasonal beer received a new name and a fresh coat of snow in 2019. Bright White is inspired by the Belgian Wit (White) style of beer that has been brewed since the Middle Ages. It’s known for its several fruity aromas, which all come from the malt and yeast. “It is easy-drinking and lighter than the long list of stouts traditionally released in the winter months,” said Larry Bell, founder and president of Bell’s Brewery.

6) Frangelic Mountain Brown by Founders Brewing Co.

Released in bottles in 2012, Frangelic Mountain Brown has quickly become a fan favorite for Michiganders. This well-balanced brown ale has a deliciously sweet and nutty coffee flavor. While the label’s artwork doesn’t resemble a snowy mountain top, the rocky cliff face does remind us of our state’s iconic changing seasons.
