Michigan native, Karly Piper Shorr of Milford secured a top 30 finish recently – making her eligible to go after one of the spots for USA Olympic Qualifying and hopefully compete in Slopestyle during the 2014 Sochi Olympics! Karly Piper Shorr, of Milford Michigan, is off to a great start when it comes to her dream of representing the United States at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Karly is a Slopestyle snowboarder and is a hopeful for the 2014 winter games. Slopestyle will make its Olympic debut at the 2014 games. Slopestyle is where competitors move down a course containing jumps and rail features. They are judged on style, amplitude, difficulty and clean execution of each element in their run.
One step closer for Karly and other Olympic hopefuls was last month at the 2013 New Zealand Winter Games, Cardrona Alpine Resort. Winter Games NZ featured the best of the world’s elite winter sports athletes in this launch pad to the 2014 Winter Olympics. Karly was able to finish 2nd within US woman behind Jamie Anderson-World Champion, who won the event overall. Karly finished 9th overall in a field of 46 female riders representing some 20 different countries.
Each athlete must finish in the top 30 in a World Cup or World Championship event and earn 100 International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup points. Karly was able secure her top 30 finish making her eligible to go to the 2014 Sochi Olympics but this does not guarantee a spot for her on the team. She also met the minimum FIS points of 100 when she was awarded 290 FIS points for her 9th place finish overall. Karly was among the youngest riders in the woman’s slopestyle competition for the day. As a result of her top USA finish she has been invited to attend the future World Cup events and all the USA Olympic Qualifying events this December 2013 and January 2014.
Karly’s family is seeking financial support to assist her and her coach, Dylan Omlin on this journey. Omlin is director and head coach of ASC to all the USA Olympic qualifying events – ASC (Auburn Ski/Snowboard Club) is a non-profit that Karly is a member of. All contributions go directly through ASC and are tax deductable – going to Karly to help cover travel expenses while getting the chance to compete amongst the best in the world!
A fundraiser event is scheduled for Tuesday October 29th at Corrati’s Restaurant in Shorr’s hometown of Milford. If you can make it, head out and show some support for Karly!
