Despite yesterday's horrible warm temperatures, things are starting to shape up for snowmaking across much of the state as the Race to Open continues. From the Upper Peninsula to the Lower Peninsula, here's the 411 on snowmaking progress in Michigan, along with an entertaining video for your enjoyment.
Temps on Monday were way too warm, with some areas in the southern part of the state reaching 60º. A very depressing fall day for those of us who can't wait to get out there and shred. Not to worry, the nice cold front that moved in on Tuesday brought us temps that were more favorable for snowmaking and hopefully a kickstart to the season. Here's the breakdown of where things are at as of Tuesday night.
Upper Peninsula:
Ski Brule – Has been open for 3 weeks now and continue to press on and make snow as temps allow.
Norway Mountain – Snowguns are cranking as their target opening date is Dec. 4th. Keep an eye on their webcam.
Big Powderhorn – Reported lower temps and snow falling this afternoon. Snowmaking to proceed as soon as their conditions are right.
Indianhead Mountain – Also has the snowguns kicked on and pumping full tilt so they can hit their Dec. 3rd target date. Check out their webcam, great shots of snowmaking operations.
Marquette Mountain – Snowmaking has started and will continue throughout the day, temps permitting. Also great webcam shots of 3 different locations on the hill.
Northern Lower Peninsula:
Nub's Nob – If you remember they made a bunch of snow toward the end of last week but lost most of it due to the warm weather. Snowmaking crews are ready to rock as soon as they get the word.
Boyne Resorts – Both Mountain and Highlands are planning on making snow asap. Highland kicked their guns back on this afternoon and Mountain was anticipating more favorable conditions in the evening. Highlands is still anticipating a Thanksgiving weekend opener!
Caberfae – Reports came in this afternoon that snowguns were roaring shortly after noon on Tuesday.
Southern Lower Peninsula:
Mt. Brighton – Wednesday morning is the target date to start making snow at Brighton, giving them a jumpstart on the season.
Alpine Valley – Temps dropped significantly and snowmaking has begun.
As more come online, we'll bring you the updates.
